Solid State and Semiconductor Physics

Description

This module deals with conceptual and theoretical aspects of solid state physics. Solid state physics studies how macroscopic properties of solid materials result from atomic scale properties. In this module, using both classical and/or quantum mechanical approaches, specific emphasis is placed on crystalline solid formation and understanding electronic properties of insulators, conductors, semiconductors and superconductors.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Develop a conceptual and theoretical understanding of various models and/or theories describing a range of condensed matter systems.

  2. Understand the fundamental models describing solid (crystalline) structure and binding.

  3. Understand complex concepts and principles relating to electronic properties and some mechanical/magnetic/optical properties.

  4. Select appropriate techniques to model solid state properties.
