Supports for Students

GMIT Mayo students in foyer

The ATU Connect team is here to help make the transition to higher education as smooth as possible, and we support our students every step of the way. We offer a range of supports, so we can find what works best for you.

Mentoring

The ATU Connect Mentoring Programme is run in conjunction with our community partner Foróige. The mentoring programme is designed off the “Big Brother Big Sister” mentoring model and has been adapted for use in a higher education setting. The programme’s aim is to help and support students settle into university life.

How it works

This is a formal mentoring programme that matches mentors and mentees on a one-to-one basis. Mentors are employees of the college, working in roles such as administration, academic and support staff.

Mentors and mentees are matched are based on mutual interests and complimentary personalities to ensure our mentees get the most out of their time with ATU.

Mentors and mentees meet once a month for an hour on the college campus. Mentees can meet their mentor for a coffee, get lunch together or go for a walk around the campus.

Mentees & mentors will be assigned a staff member who will support them throughout the year. Mentees & mentors can contact the staff person if they have any questions or concerns.

I was more confident being in college and was able to achieve my goals with the support of my mentor.

Other Supports

The ATU Connect project is linked to the Access & Participation office. The team are committed to improving equality of opportunity to access, succeed in and progress from ATU Galway Mayo.

We support students whose personal or socio-economic circumstances mean they need extra support to enter and/or attend ATU. We do this by providing a wide range of supports and services such as:
