Sustainability and the Circular Economy

Description

This module will introduce the student to methods, strategies & technologies involved in delivering a more resource efficient and circular built environment, particularly focusing on minimising environmental impact from the construction process & the digitalisation for sustainability & the circular economy. 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the complexities of sustainability issues in the built environment, the associated environmental impacts and the SDGs.

  2. Explore and critically evaluate opportunities to design out, prevent and reduce construction and demolition waste (CDW) throughout all phases of project.

  3. Explore and critically evaluate opportunities to embed resource efficiency best practice throughout all phases in a project focusing on energy, water, and carbon, lifecycle thinking and assessment including whole embodied and operational carbon analysis.

  4. Evaluate the implementation of circular economy principles within the built environment, including green & circular procurement.

  5. Critically evaluate the social and ethical role of the built environment and its stakeholders.

  6. Exploration of digital tools and processes to support sustainability and the circular economy across the built environment value chain.
