Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics to work processes in thermodynamics components and to cycles for power production for the listed systems:
            o Air Breathing Reciprocating Engines - Cont'D
            o Vapour power engines
            o Axial and radial flow turbines
            o Reciprocating expanders and compressors
            o Gas turbine cycle
            o Reciprocating air motors
            o  Combustion theory

  2. Draw (Pv, Tv, and Ts) diagrams for the above systems and discuss details relating to the diagrams

  3. Calculate the thermal efficiencies for the various classes of engineering devices and cycles and be able to list strategies for improvement

  4. Calculate the enthalpy of combustion, adiabatic flame temperatures, equilibrium constants and compositions for various combustion systems

  5. Calculate efficiency of different boiler types
