Youth Culture

Description

This module examines the construction and development of youth culture and transitions.  It brings together the two major traditions of youth research: 1) the study of youth culture, sub-culture and identity, and 2) the study of the transition from adolescence into adulthood.  Through various disciplines understandings of youth culture during modernity to contemporary understandings will be examined.  

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of youth culture, sub-culture and identity 

  2. Outline the formation of adolescence as a social category associated with modernity 

  3. Critically examine youth culture, individualism, consumerism and youth activism and their contribution to the formation of youth communities 

  4. Demonstrate an understanding of cultural difference, gender, social class in relation to transitions of development into adulthood

  5. Critically appraise the role of film and television in constructing understandings of youth culture
